About the book, Role of Mass Media in Higher Education
The media, in some form or other, has remained an integral part of human civilization serving its purpose as a medium to inform people. In Indian society, the form of media has been changing over the time. Its form evolved from the Vedas and Upanishads in ancient India, Ashoka’s Stupas in medieval era to modern day television, press, internet and online education.
India possesses a highly developed higher education system which offers facility of education and training in almost all aspects of human creative and intellectual endeavours: arts and humanities; natural, mathematical and social sciences, engineering; medicine; dentistry; agriculture; education; law; commerce and management; music and performing arts; national and foreign languages; culture; communications etc. In its size and diversity, India has the third largest higher education system in the world, next only to China and the United States.
The rapid revolution in the field of information technology has enabled the media like never before. In today’s digital world, mass media plays a pivotal role in the growth and development of any nation and it is all the more significant in the developing nation like India. It has been observed that if mass media can appropriately be used, it can be proved no lesser than a miracle or a boon.
It is also to be noted that there are many constraints that limit the opportunities for mass media in higher education of our nation. Some of them are cultural, social and geographical issues, resources, time frame, lack of proper infrastructure, communication pattern, regulations and policies of the institutions etc. But still there are ample scopes for mass media to write and create a better future in higher education. It has been found out how mass media is in the process of changing the society and is capable to get over higher education into cyber space.
New Education Policy 2020 which brings about several major reforms in education in India and in the time of pandemic COVID 19 has altogether changed the phase of higher education and mass media. Moreover, The NEP after thirty-four years has come up with vocational and choice-based education which will enormously affect the higher education towards the digital education.
I strongly believe that the time has come to teach the aspirants of higher education through the Twitterature and not just limited to Literature. The research work carried out before two years aptly and strongly support the current scenario. This reform would transform the lives of millions of Indians.
