Story from The Pilgrims of Darkness Book.

The farmer continued, ‘Listen to me very carefully. Whenever you go out for your work of stealing, understand one thing very well; what is visible to you and what does not belong to you, you have a right on those things. You also have your share in whatever is placed in the farms and fields, homes and palaces, and in temples. Don’t hesitate to take it anytime without permission. Take it with a sense of ownership.’

The farmer understood Sati’s confusion but he kept speaking, ‘Though I am a farmer; I take twenty times more than I give to this land. So it is not only I who is entitled to have its returns. Whatever you take, it is nature’s command to share it with others.

As soon as I sow the seeds, the birds come to pick at them. Once the seeds start sprouting, cattle start invading and then you people come to take the ripened crop. You still work for it but there are others like beggars, Gor (priests), Baniya and the king’s men who take away without any work.

That is why, hear me out, we all belong to the same caste, be it a farmer or a merchant or a king. They consider themselves as owners but we belong to the same community of thieves. God created things for everyone but we claim our ownership and take them away. Are we also not Lat (a thief who loots people by deceiving)?

When I cannot deny them from taking, how can I deny you? I don’t mean to say that follow them. But you have worked for it; that is why I am saying, take it. It’s your right.’
